The 1978 Oberheim OB-1 – An Underrated Enigma.
It’s incredible that the Oberheim OB-1 has remained under the radar for so long. The Oberheim OB-1 holds a special place in the history of synthesisers. Launched in 1978, it was the world’s first programmable monophonic synthesiser. Designed by Tom Oberheim and his team, this revolutionary instrument brought the power of preset memory to the world of analogue synthesis, allowing musicians to easily store and recall their unique sounds.
Despite its groundbreaking features and historical significance, the OB-1 has remained somewhat under the radar compared to other classic synthesisers like the Minimoog. However, those who have experienced its capabilities know that the OB-1 is a true gem. This instrument delivers a sound as beefy and robust as the legendary Minimoog, yet it can get as aggressive as the MS20. It strikes a perfect balance, sitting sonically between these two icons.
In a superbly crafted documentary produced and narrated by the esteemed Dave Spiers, the history and uniqueness of the Oberheim OB-1 are brought to life in a way that is both enlightening and deeply engaging.

I love that the same simple sequence plays for nearly 10 minutes, but takes us on a journey as the instrument is explored and by the end feels like a piece in it’s own right.
Loved the loop. For some reason, that specific note sequence just gave me a lovely feeling of nostalgia that I have not felt for a while. Thanks :)

How would the sound differ from the OB-E?
Different filters and Env, OB-1 has OSC waveshaping, it's quite unique and different sounding than the Oberheim SEM/8 Voice :-)
This would be a fantastic initial IOS offering by GF.

The only use of the OB-1 I know of was by Geddy Lee of Rush for the synth sequence "The Spirit Of Radio". I love the sound of this thing though with its wave morphing VCOs.

Man, have some decency. They don't owe you one thing.
In the late 80's there was a music store that had yearly special sales where they would clear out their warehouses and get rid of big overstock (and some really old) gear. Being a young poor musician, they had a Moog Prodigy for $60 and an OB-1 for $80. I got the Moog because it was a little cheaper and I love it, but man I would have loved to get both, though the quirky memory and controls would have taken me a while to figure out without a manual (or the internet to find out the quirks.)
I walked by one in a music store leaning against the wall in the early 90's with a price tag of $75! I kick myself for not buying it but yeah, money was tough when I was young!
